On top of the hob, you have two hotplates (one wood, one electric), which can be used both as a hotplate, but also cooked directly on top of. And when the stovetop is going, the entire hob becomes a cooking surface, allowing you to boil a kettle directly over the firebox, or move it back to keep it at a simmer.
